Artificial intelligence (AI) has recently influenced every sector of life, including education. The modern day classrooms truly deserve a feel of the innovations that artificial intelligence offers. This study examines the implementation of artificial intelligence in classroom teaching and learning in secondary schools in Abakaliki metropolis. The main purpose of the study is to determine the extent of implementation of AI tools in the classroom in Abakaliki metropolis. Specifically, the study sought to determine the level of awareness, availability, benefits, challenges affecting implementation and the attitude of teachers towards AI. The descriptive survey design was adopted for the study, using questionnaires administered to teachers. Findings reveal that AI tools such as intelligent tutoring systems, automated grading system and adaptive learning platforms help to improve teachers’ efficiency, students’ learning and personalized instruction. However, setbacks such as lack of digital infrastructure, lack of digital skills among teachers and high cost of implementation were identified. The study concludes that artificial intelligence has all it takes to transform our classroom instructions, support students learning if properly implemented; but cannot substitute the position of a teacher. It therefore recommends that government and schools should invest in digital technological infrastructure, training of teachers and formulation of policies that will promote responsible use of artificial intelligence.
