Abstract

The study assessed the Biology students’ and teachers’ level of awareness of AI tools and their utilization in teaching and learning in secondary schools in Ebonyi State. The study employed a descriptive survey research design. Two research questions guided the study, and one hypothesis was tested. The population was 30 biology teachers and 6,496 SS11 students in the twenty-nine public secondary schools in Abakaliki Education Zone of Ebonyi state. The 30 teachers were used while a sample of 75 SS I1 students were selected using simple random sampling technique from two purposively sampled co-educational schools. Awareness and Utilization of AI Tools for Teaching and Learning of Biology Questionnaire (AUAITTLBQ) was the instrument used for data collection. Cronbach alpha values for the questionnaire was 0.81. Data for research questions were analysed using Mean and Standard Deviation while hypothesis was tested using Independent sample t-test. Findings showed that students possess high level of awareness while teachers possess a low level of awareness on the AI tools being used in secondary schools; students and teachers generally indicated that AI tools were rarely utilized in biology teaching and learning. There was a statistically significant difference in the responses of the students and teachers on the awareness of AI tools for teaching and learning biology. The study recommended that workshops and seminars on AI utilisation be organised by the Ebonyi state Secondary Education Board for students and in- service teachers. Government should provide adequate computer laboratory equipment at schools for staff and students for AI tools utilization in schools.
